3M™ Thinsulate™ Window Film

3M™ Thinsulate™ Window Film

In 2016, 3M™Australia announced the arrival of its newest technology film: 3M™ Thinsulate™ Climate Control Series 75. In 2018, they then announced the introduction of the 3M Thinsulate Climate Control Series 40 – a slightly darker variant to offer improved privacy and additional heat rejection benefits in Summer.

These amazing films need to be seen to be believed. If you are considering installing double glazing to your home, or using low-E glazing in your new build to upgrade the energy efficiency of your home, please contact us regarding 3M™ Thinsulate™ Window Film before you make any decisions.

3M™ Thinsulate™ Window Film is a low emissivity (“low e”) window film which improves the insulation values of your glass windows, to rival the benefits offered by double glazing or low-e glass at a fraction of the cost (read our in depth review and case studies comparing energy efficient glazing options here for more information).  Virtually invisible after installation (and drying time), the film also offers protection against 99% of UV rays and invisible solar-reflecting technology, keeping you cooler in Summer and preventing fading of your furniture, window treatments and flooring.

Did you know 30% of your heating/ cooling costs come from energy escaping through untreated windows? The extra insulation provided by 3M™ Thinsulate™ Window Film will make a dramatic difference to your energy consumption costs, as it helps retain heat indoors in Winter, and prevent your cooled air escaping over Summer. No more needing to close your curtains against the summer sun, or living in dark rooms over winter, – you can keep your natural light AND your comfortable home temperature.

With a high visible light transmission (VLT of 75% – meaning very light), 3M™ Thinsulate™ Window Film can be applied with very little aesthetic change to the look of your windows, making it ideal for strata-controlled apartments or any situation where you wish to maintain the building’s existing appearance.  This high VLT also means that you will enjoy all the benefits of year round comfort without any significant loss of natural light.

Alternatively, the 40% VLT option will still provide substantial natural light (when compared against more traditional window tints between 15 and 25% VLT), but will provide more privacy and reject more heat and glare in summer than the 75% option.  The CC40 is an impressive product, with up to 60% solar energy rejection on clear glass, similar ability at rejection of Infra-red heat as the 3M Prestige range (up to 97%) and glare reduction by 59%.

Don’t be fooled by comparing the Thinsulate Specification Card against those of the Night Vision, Ceramic or Prestige Solar Control films, and think that the Thinsulate’s 47-60% solar heat energy rejection doesn’t add up against the figures from the others (up to 72% for the Night Vision 15), as the Thinsulate is a very different film to your typical Solar Control films.  Dedicated solar films are primarily designed to prevent the sun’s energy from entering your home, and in order to be effective, relies on the glass being exposed to the sun.  The Thinsulate’s solar heat energy rejection is only ONE of the ways it works to reduce heat gain inside your home.  Thinsulate is also designed to prevent radiant heat transfer from one side of the glass to the other side – it is this feature that makes it a true insulating product, rather than a solar film, and is the way it provides all year round comfort – keeping warm air in during winter, and keeping the warm air out during the summer months.  Testing by 3M has also shown that the 3M Thinsulate range stops infra-read heat waves to a similar extent to the 3M Prestige range (97%) – this is the heat you feel, rather than see (ie the radiated or reflected heat you still feel on a hot day even when sitting in the shade).

Further, the 3M Thinsulate range is backed by a lifetime warranty in residential homes, which is longer than any warranty for purpose built low-e glass.  Cheaper than double glazing or installation of low-e glass in new builds, the 3M Thinsulate is also a fantastic way to improve the energy efficiency of existing homes, and is significantly cheaper than retrofitting double glazing or replacing glass in older homes to low-e glass.
